If You Build It, They Will Come

It’s that time of the week again, for me to parlay a simple tip to you, so that you can turn it into something fruitful. It’s a final piece of advice in this short series on LinkedIn. I’ve already given some tips on growing your network by linking in, using keywords and getting your group on, so today let’s talk about working with what you already have.

Today’s Tip: Look through your existing connections on LinkedIn and send 5 potential business leads a personal message. (Note: business lead also = potential job connection or any other type of connection you’re looking to make)

I’m willing to bet that if your message is personable (and not a sales pitch), and it ends with something like this…I’d love to get together for coffee soon…that you’ll actually end up having coffee with that person, and in my experience, coffee leads to work. I’d have to say that most of my new business is a direct result from a very personal, and non-threatening, cup of coffee. In fact, I’d call 90% of my clients, friends…and I’m working on that last 10%. I’m a big believer in mixing business and pleasure, and I’m proud of it too!

Now I’m going to make, what might seem obvious to some, an observation. When you send that message and get a reply affirming that ‘indeed we should get together‘, many people will not pick up that ball. YOU MUST BE THE ONE TO PICK IT UP. Reply back to the person with dates. You will otherwise, strike-out!

So, it’s pretty simple. If you build on the relationships you already have, those new clients will come. Try it out this week and see what happens. Then, try it out next week too, and every week beyond that. Your business will grow by leaps and bounds when you build upon what you already have.
